The Drift Boat Experience Then and Now

It is appropriate to reflect on this great river’s heritage and the historical success story of how the McKenzie River Drift Boat evolved to become the icon of adventure and the ambassador of an outdoor experience that still draws people to the area today.   

  • This story tells of the first boats to run the great white water rivers of Oregon, 

  • About new river accessibility that was embraced by many in the growing outdoor industry,

  • Of white water parades watched by over 20,000 people along the banks of the McKenzie River,

  • How a larger design for the Colorado River played its part in saving the Grand Canyon from dams planned in the 1960s

  • And becoming an icon of Oregon, including being invited to the Festival of American Folk Art sponsored by the Smithsonian Museum.
